Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, recently announced its commitment to the MEP 2040 Challenge, an effort to radically reduce total carbon emissions associated with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing building systems by 2040(MEP 2040 Challenge). Initiated under the Carbon Leadership Forum, MEP 2040 challenges all systems engineers to advocate for and achieve net zero operational carbon by 2030 and net zero embodied carbon by 2040 in their projects.
Focused on environmental, social, and governance principles, Stantec works to reduce embodied carbon emissions in its project work and prioritizes the reduction of embodied carbon by using fewer and less impactful mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and structural materials.
“At Stantec, climate solutions are the foundation of our identity, considered in every aspect of our business and directly tied to our strategic plan,” said Sergio Sádaba, principal and performance engineering lead for Stantec’s global Buildings practice. “We design solutions that make meaningful progress towards carbon neutral buildings and landscapes and prioritize materials that have a positive impact on the environment, climate, human health, and society.”
The firm designs with community in mind and recognizes the urgency and professional responsibility of mitigating carbon emissions and their impact on the climate and built environment. In addition to MEP 2040, Stantec is also signatory to the AIA 2030 Commitment, AIA Materials Pledge, and SE 2050. The firm was once again named to the Corporate Knights’ ranking of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in early 2024.
