The new Mitikah mixed-use development recently opened in Mexico City and includes the largest retail center in Latin America. Global integrated design firm Stantec provided retail design as part of the larger project design team with Cesar Pelli (PCPA), Enrique Norten, SMA (Sordo Madaleno), and Colonnier y Asosciados.
The expansive development will be home to residential and commercial space, including a movie theater, major department stores and more than 280 retail spaces spanning five floors, adding up to nearly 120,000 square meters (1.29 million square feet).
In addition to the five-story shopping center, the mixed-use complex features three high-rise towers in its current phase of development. The first building, all residential, houses 675 apartments for purchase and spans 267.3 meters tall (876 feet), over 65 stories, making it the tallest building in Mexico City. The second tower offers 65,000 square meters (700,000 square feet) of office space for tenants and stretches above 170 meters tall (558 feet), over 35 floors. The third tower houses doctors’ offices.
The meandering retail network spills out onto a generous public plaza with green spaces and a multitude of restaurants that help connect the site to the existing streetscape and urban fabric.
“It’s staggering to think about the scale of this project. Mitikah has been under construction for nearly 14 years,” said Shannon Jones, studio leader for Stantec’s Visioning, Brands, and Experiences (ViBE) group, a team of multidisciplinary designers involved with the project. “With over 11 million square feet of development, this multifaceted center is a vital piece of the public realm, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the collaborative effort to bring it to life.”
Mitikah is located south of Mexico City, strategically located in an area that is accessible with both pedestrian access and access to Coyoacán metro link.
