Ritchie Peng, President of Huawei 5G Product Line, delivered an opening speech on “Continuous Innovation for 5G Business Success” during the 2022 Global Mobile Broadband Forum. Peng Honghua said: “The global 5G has been accelerating, and has reached the level of development that 4G has reached in first five years, within three years. Huawei has continuously invested in basic technology innovation, architecture innovation, and algorithm innovation to build industry-leading Massive MIMO products, helping operators and users build a win-win 5G network.
Massive MIMO is the cornerstone of high-quality 5G networks.
Three years of Innovation for 5G Business success have developed rapidly. This brings 10 times the experience of 5G users than 4G users and 3 times the traffic growth for leading operators, achieving a win-win situation for both users and operators. Massive MIMO is the core 5G technology. With its advantages such as large capacity, high energy efficiency, and high integration, Massive MIMO has become the global mainstream 5G network technology. According to public data, operators with the leading 5G traffic ratio use mid-band Massive MIMO as mainstream for network construction.
Huawei Continuously Leads Massive MIMO Innovation
Huawei has been focused on Massive MIMO for years. Over the years, Huawei has invested heavily in hardware and algorithm innovation, and continuously launched industry-leading products. The shipment volume of Huawei AAU leads the world.
In terms of hardware, Huawei has developed unique active and passive joint design innovations based on basic research on filters, power amplifiers, and new materials to achieve higher integration, higher bandwidth, and lower power consumption. At the algorithm level, Huawei maximizes the beam advantages of Massive MIMO and builds a series of innovative algorithms, such as AHR, to achieve better experience, stronger coverage, and higher capacity.
Based on traditional AAUs, Huawei brings massive MIMO from outdoors to indoors. The industry’s only distributed M-MIMO sets a new benchmark for indoor experience. In indoor hotspot traffic areas, the capacity can be increased by more than four times.
The M-MIMO has also been carried to the FDD frequency band. FDD NR network construction faces several driving forces: relieving 4G traffic congestion, enhancing 5G anchor, and improving capacity and experience for operators whose TDD large bandwidths are temporarily unavailable. To address this, Huawei applies ultra-broadband and multi-antenna technologies to FDD frequency bands to improve user experience and energy efficiency and meet future network evolution requirements.
MetaAAU Leads the New Direction of Massive MIMO
Huawei’s MetaAAU, based on the ELAA technology, is leading the innovation direction of Massive MIMO. Currently, it has been deployed globally in Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Europe, and has realized the benefits of experience, coverage, traffic, and energy efficiency.
In urban or suburban continuous deployment scenarios and indoor scenarios, the uplink and downlink user experience can be improved by over 30%, and the traffic volume can increase by over 20%. To achieve ultimate energy saving, power halving can be used while same downlink experience and 30% higher uplink experience can be obtained, reducing base station energy consumption by 30%, achieving ultimate energy saving.
In the future, personal experience and industry digitalization will pose higher challenges to network capabilities. Ritchie Peng said that Huawei will continue to innovate and build a greener, more simplified 5G network with higher bandwidth, more channels, and more integrated products to accelerate the 5G business cycle.
The 13th Global Mobile Broadband Forum is hosted by Huawei, with support from our industry partners GSMA and GTI. It offers an opportunity for the mobile and adjacent vertical ecosystems to reconnect, rebuild, and reimagine a fully connected, intelligent world. Topics to be discussed range from harnessing the full potential of 5G, to advancing the mobile future, including the latest developments of 5G-Advanced, intelligence, and green 5G.
