The Coca-Cola Company and Local Bottler Support Jackson, MS Disaster Relief Efforts
After heavy rains caused the Pearl River to flood and disrupt the local water treatment facility, the greater Jackson, MS community was left without water for drinking, cooking and plumbing. As the weeks long issue continues to affect Jackson residents, The Coca-Cola System is providing support and resources where they’re needed most.
Together with the local bottler in the region, Clark Beverage Group, they’ve donated thousands of cases of water to the area. Many went to their nonprofit partners the American Red Cross, World Central Kitchen, and Good360 as they actively provide aid and relief throughout the city. Distribution will target at-risk, vulnerable communities and individuals most in need. Additional cases went to the bottler in Jackson to help support their associates.
The Coca-Cola Company has awarded two $75K grants totaling $150K to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and the NAACP. UNCF will support the students, staff and families at local HBCU’s affected by the flooding. NAACP will support relief efforts to help those impacted in Jackson and surrounding areas.
Together with they bottler, they continue to stay close to the needs of our local communities in the Jackson area.
About Coca-Cola
The Coca-Cola Company is an American multinational beverage corporation founded in 1892, best known as the producer of Coca-Cola. The Coca-Cola Company also manufactures, sells, and markets other non-alcoholic beverage concentrates and syrups, and alcoholic beverages. The company’s stock is listed on the NYSE and is part of the DJIA and the S&P 500 and S&P 100 indexes.
The soft drink was developed in 1886 by pharmacist John Stith Pemberton. At the time it was introduced, the product contained cocaine from coca leaves and caffeine from kola nuts which together acted as a stimulant. The coca and the kola are the source of the product name, and led to Coca-Cola’s promotion as a “healthy tonic”. Pemberton had been severely wounded in the Civil War, and had become addicted to the pain medication morphine. He developed the beverage as a patent medicine in an effort to control his addiction.
